The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max use Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, wrapped around an aluminum unibody, according to Apple’s tech specs. The two glass names are different on purpose: only the front carries the newer 2 designation, and Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro pages publish no scratch-resistance multiplier for either surface.
That last point matters because the topic attracts numbers that Apple has attached to other products. The only Ceramic Shield 2 toughness figure in Apple’s September pages is for Apple Watch Series 12, not for iPhone. Here is what Apple’s tech specs for the iPhone 18 Pro actually say about the glass and the frame, where the same materials appear elsewhere in the lineup, and what remains unpublished.

Front vs back: why only one side says Ceramic Shield 2
Apple’s tech specs list the front glass as Ceramic Shield 2 and the back simply as Ceramic Shield. The naming follows what Apple lists for the iPhone Duo and the iPhone Air, both of which pair a Ceramic Shield 2 front with a Ceramic Shield back. The standard iPhone 17 gets Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and what Apple calls color-infused glass on the back.

Apple’s spec pages do not explain the technical difference between the two generations of the material, and they do not say whether the rear panel of the 18 Pro changed from the 17 Pro. The rear finish is new for this generation, according to Apple’s press release, but the release describes a finish rather than a glass formulation.
Aluminum unibody, not titanium
The frame is the bigger change. Apple’s tech specs describe the iPhone 18 Pro as an aluminum unibody design, and Apple’s press release puts the recycled aluminum content of the enclosure at 85 percent. Apple’s compare page lists a titanium frame for the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone Air, so the 18 Pro is the first Pro since the 15 Pro generation without titanium in its enclosure description.

The 18 Pro’s dimensions match the 17 Pro exactly at 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm, yet weight rises from 206 g to 211 g, and the Pro Max from 233 g to 249 g. Apple has not published a reason, so we do not attribute it to the frame or anything else.
Where Apple does publish a toughness number: Apple Watch Series 12
Apple’s marketing page for the Apple Watch Series 12 describes its Ceramic Shield 2 front crystal as tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than Ion-X, the glass Apple used on earlier aluminum watches. That claim belongs to the aluminum Series 12 only; the titanium and ceramic Series 12 models use sapphire crystal, as does the Apple Watch Ultra 4.
Apple has not published an equivalent multiplier for iPhone 18 Pro. If you see a figure such as three times better scratch resistance attached to the phone, it is not on Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs page or in Apple’s press release, and we do not repeat it.
How the iPhone Duo differs
The iPhone Duo uses the same pair of glass names on its outer surfaces, but its 7.6-inch folding inner display is a different case. Apple’s Duo marketing page describes a nano-texture finish with a scratch-resistant coating on the inner panel rather than Ceramic Shield, and a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover. Both phones share the IP68 rating to 6 meters for 30 minutes.
What Apple has not said
- Any scratch, drop or toughness multiplier for Ceramic Shield 2 or Ceramic Shield on iPhone 18 Pro.
- What separates Ceramic Shield 2 from Ceramic Shield in composition or process.
- Whether the rear Ceramic Shield panel changed from the iPhone 17 Pro beyond the new finish.
- Why the 18 Pro weighs 5 g more than the 17 Pro, and the Pro Max 16 g more, at identical dimensions.
